French jewelry maison Cartier is bringing its 10-year-old initiative to a new location.
As part of its “Artist meets Artisan” series, which includes collaborations with contemporary artists, the brand presents “Aquarium,” a large-scale mobile by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. The work is on view at Cartier’s Newbury Street flagship from now through May 17, 2026.
“Fascinating elements dancing in the space with different rhythms,” said Ms. Milhazes, in a statement.
“We can observe all the details from up close, and a brightness and vibrancy from afar, as if observing an aquarium from a dream world.”
Bejeweled art
“Aquarium” is an eight-foot mobile composed of 15 strands of precious and semi-precious stones, including diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, amethysts, and opals.
Ms. Milhazes and Cartier collaborated over two years to create the piece, which was finally completed in 2010. Since then, it has been exhibited in Miami, Paris and New York City.
The 66-year-old artist is known for her vibrant, layered compositions that marry modernism with a Brazilian point of view, and in 2025, New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presented her work in the first-ever solo show of a Brazilian artist.

Artist meets Artisan, first launched in 2009, enables artists to collaborate with Cartier’s ateliers and transform unused stones into one-of-a-kind artworks.
Four other artists have participated in the program, including Italian designer and architect Alessandro Mendini, American filmmaker and actor David Lynch, Japanese actor and director Takeshi Kitano and French artist Jean-Michel Alberola.
Earlier in March, the house celebrated two decades of The Cartier Women’s Initiative, a program dedicated to supporting women-impact entrepreneurs around the world (see story).
