French jewelry maison Cartier is turning to the U.K. to continue its support of artisans.
In partnership with The King’s Foundation, the educational charity founded by King Charles III, the maison is launching a fellowship for specialist watch and jewelrymaking professionals. Titled “The King’s Foundation and Cartier: Decorative Métiers d’Art in Watchmaking,” the initiative will see recent grads and emerging designers undergo training before crafting final projects, which will be presented during an exhibition set for spring 2027.

“Support for creative talents in watchmaking and the métiers d’art is crucial to ensure these ancestral skills are transmitted to the next generation, where they can continue to share their singular beauty,” Mr. Ferla said. “This commitment reaffirms the Maison’s longstanding dedication to the shared human adventure of preserving, developing and, of course, celebrating these rare and traditional crafts.”
Emerging talents
The program will see participants complete five months of formal training before being given two months to work on their final project.
Throughout the process, participants will be taught advanced specialist skills, including champlevé and grisaille enamelling, as well as marquetry, by expert tutors and master craftspeople from both the charity and the luxury maison. The group will reside within Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, which is also The King’s Foundation’s headquarters, during the educational portion, before moving to Cartier’s Maison des Métiers d’Art in Switzerland for the second and final phase.

“This course will give students a rare opportunity to learn the highly specialized skills involved in the decorative arts for watchmaking,” Ms. Farrell said. “By nurturing the next generation of makers in two extraordinary settings in Scotland and Switzerland, we hope to ensure that these remarkable skills are preserved and developed for years to come.”
Applications for the fellowship are now open. Admission is reserved for recent U.K.-based jewelry and watchmaking graduates, as well as independent designers who are within three years of the start of their business.
Italian luxury conglomerate OTB Group operates a similar program in its home country, with its focus set on students in the fashion industry. The group recently welcomed its fifth class of participants (see story).
