Italian fashion label Versace is on the hunt for a new artistic lead.

On Dec. 4, the maison announced that Dario Vitale will depart from his role as creative director on Dec. 12, with a successor said to be named “in due course.” The exit comes shortly after Italy’s Prada Group closed its acquisition of Versace this week.

“We would like to sincerely thank Dario for his outstanding contribution to the development of the brand’s creative strategy during this transition period, and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavours,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, executive chairman of Versace, in a statement.

On the move
Mr. Vitale premiered his debut collection for the brand in September at Milan Fashion Week to great acclaim.

His debut campaign, which centered on the label’s Greca eyewear collection, was released shortly after and featured the talents of English actors Aimee Lou Wood and Joseph Quinn (see story). These releases have turned out to be Mr. Vitale’s only output for the maison, with Versace CEO Emmanuel Gintzburger leading the creative team until their next artistic figurehead is secured.

Mr. Vitale was hired to succeed Donatella Versace in March, with the announcement of Prada Group’s acquisition of the brand following shortly after in April. The approximately $1.375 billion cash deal was completed on Dec. 2 and has led to new senior leadership at the label.

Lorenzo Bertelli, the son of Prada Group chairman Patrizio Bertelli and board member Miuccia Prada, stepped in as executive chairman of Versace upon the acquisition’s certification while also maintaining his seat as an executive director of the parent company.
