Italian fashion label Prada is bringing its “Made In…” series to India, launching a limited-edition sandal collection inspired by traditional Kolhapuri Chappals as it introduces a three-year artisan training program.

The footwear designs, manufactured by skilled artisans from the Maharashtra and Karnataka regions where Kolhapuri Chappals are traditionally handcrafted, are now available globally in 40 selected Prada stores and on prada.com. The collection was developed in collaboration with LIDCOM and LIDKAR, Indian government organizations focused on safeguarding and promoting the country’s leather industry and Kolhapuri Chappal heritage.

“Education is a fundamental pillar in ensuring that craftsmanship remains a living practice,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, head of corporate social responsibility at Prada Group, in a statement.

“With this training program, we are translating a shared cultural dialogue into a concrete opportunity for learning and growth,” Mr. Bertelli said. “Supporting artisans through structured training means safeguarding knowledge, strengthening local communities, and ensuring that traditional craftsmanship continues to evolve and thrive.”

Artisanry at its finest
The training program, fully funded by Prada – proceeds from the sandal collection will go towards the cause – will run in structured six-month modules over three years, reaching 180 artisans from the eight Indian districts where Kolhapuri Chappals are traditionally manufactured.

Applications are open to artisans aged 18 to 45, with the program developed in partnership with the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Karnataka Institute of Leather & Fashion Technology, where courses will be delivered.

The training program is fully funded by Prada

The first cohort of 30 artisans — 15 at each institute — will begin training this summer, with applications opening in May 2026. At the conclusion of each six-month module, select participants will have the opportunity to continue training at the Prada Group Academy in Italy, working directly with the group's maestros to further develop their technical expertise.

The sandal launch marks a new chapter in Prada's "Made In..." project, launched more than a decade ago to celebrate artisanal excellence globally through collaborations with master craftspeople on contemporary designs.
