Resale platform Rebag is detailing the factors that shaped the secondhand luxury landscape this year.
The 2025 Clair Report reveals the impact of international tariffs on high-end goods over the past 12 months, with affluent clientele turning to the resale market en masse in search of both cost-efficiency and nostalgic looks. Several prestige labels, such as French fashion and leather goods brand Hermès, French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels and Swiss watchmaker Rolex, led the way this year, with demand and price retention often outpacing that of new items.
“Global tariff shifts and evolving consumer behaviors have made 2025 a defining year for luxury resale," said Charles Gorra, founder and CEO of Rebag, in a statement.
“Higher primary prices pushed more consumers to the secondary market, reaffirming its stability,” Mr. Gorra said. “The 2025 Clair Report highlights the brands demonstrating lasting long-term value.”
The sixth edition of the report utilizes data from Rebag’s proprietary Clair – Comprehensive Luxury Appraisal Index for Resale – software suite, pulling statistics from primary and secondary sales from the last 12 months.
On the up and up
Hermès was identified as 2025’s top performer, with secondhand price retention averaging 138 percent of primary sale items, which also marked a 38 percent increase over its figures from 2024.
The leather goods and apparel label led the pre-owned luxury handbag market, with its Kelly Mini II, Birkin Sellier and Constance clutches surging in demand and shrinking availability. In particular, the Kelly Mini II saw its pricetag increase to nearly three times that of its initial cost at retail.

Rebag states that the fine jewelry segment solidified its status as investible assets this year, with pieces from Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier outpacing the competition in value growth. Increased cost of gold and other raw materials due to global tariffs is cited for the short-term boom.
Timepieces reflected this trend, with select Rolex models doubling their retail asking prices and average sale prices remaining above those of new items. Chronographs from Audemars Piguet, Breitling and Omega also proved popular.
Nostalgic items, particularly those from limited-edition collections from throughout the 2000s seeing surges in demand. The re-issue of the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami capsule was the catalyst for this activity, with Balenciaga’s Le City bag line and Chloé's Paddington selection also seeing large bumps in interest, with searches rising as much as 986 percent.
Moving forward
As the industry looks ahead to 2026, Rebag has spotlighted that several new handbag releases, such as the Gucci Softbit and Chanel 25, are already seeing their secondhand value surpassing that of the initial retail price, while others are following closely behind.
For the resale market, this trend could prove fruitful. With this in mind, as well as having seen the reaction to multiple debut collections from several new creative directors across the industry, the resale platform foresees the concepts of prestige craftsmanship, material integrity and design longevity serving as focal points for both designers and consumers alike.

Recent findings from Boston Consulting Group and French luxury resale platform Vestiaire Collective back up claims of future growth, as the secondhand high-end market is projected to reach a valuation of $360 billion by 2030 (see story).
With greater financial strains expected to hit the primary luxury sales space in 2026 (see story), the resale segment’s rapid rise could receive another shot in the arm as well.
